Chloride-free organic fertilizers

Chloride is one of the biggest limits on yield in the Mediterranean's highest-value crops. It accumulates in the leaf, competes with nitrate uptake and raises soil conductivity. Ecoganic fertilizers and biostimulants add no chloride and no sodium, because they start from bioreactor-grown freshwater microalgae rather than marine seaweed.

What chloride does to your crop

It accumulates in the leaf

Chloride moves with the transpiration stream and concentrates at the leaf margins. The classic symptom is marginal necrosis, which cuts photosynthetic area before any yield drop is visible.

It competes with nitrate

Chloride and nitrate compete for the same anion transporters in the root. The more chloride in the soil solution, the less efficient every unit of nitrogen you apply becomes.

It raises electrical conductivity

Every chloride input raises the EC of the soil solution. The crop must spend more energy to extract the same water — osmotic stress, which shows up as smaller fruit.

The sodium alongside it degrades soil

Chloride sources usually carry sodium. Sodium disperses clays, seals porosity and cuts infiltration. The damage is cumulative and takes seasons to reverse.

Crops where chloride decides the margin

Not every crop responds the same way. In these, chloride and sodium sensitivity is a first-order agronomic factor — and they are also the highest value per hectare in the Mediterranean basin.

The marine seaweed paradox

The vast majority of seaweed biostimulants on the market start from marine species — Ascophyllum nodosum, Ecklonia maxima, kelp. These grow in seawater, and their extract carries the salts of that medium.

Applied repeatedly through fertigation on a salt-sensitive crop, that means adding season after season the very ion that limits it. Ecoganic starts from freshwater unicellular microalgae — Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus — grown in controlled bioreactors: constant batch-to-batch composition, no marine salts, no heavy metals.

What is the difference between "chloride-free" and "low chloride"?

"Low chloride" allows a residual content that accumulates with every application. Ecoganic fertilizers do not include chloride as part of their formulation: the input through this route is nil, not reduced.

Can I use marine seaweed biostimulants on avocado or blueberry?

You can, but it is worth knowing what you are adding. Marine seaweed extracts carry the salts of the medium they grow in. On chloride- and sodium-sensitive crops, applied repeatedly through fertigation, that input adds to the irrigation water and the rest of the fertilization programme.

Are they approved for certified organic farming?

Yes. The range is certified under EU Regulation 2018/848, the USDA National Organic Program and the Japanese JAS standard, as well as ECOCERT.

How do I know if my plot has a chloride problem?

The usual indicators are marginal leaf necrosis, unexplained loss of fruit size, and a saturated-extract EC above the crop threshold. A leaf analysis and an irrigation water analysis confirm it — they are the basis for deciding whether changing source is worthwhile.
